Like the Moon …

April 11, 2011

April: showers, taxes, and this year, intensive practice at the Zen center. One night, as we walked away from the center, my friend Mike directed my attention upwards. The clouds, which had covered the sky like flocks of lost sheep since sometime in February had finally cleared. The moon’s crescent was hanging overhead, shining bright. Open to possibility.

From the Dhammapada —

However young,
The seeker who sets out upon the way
Shines bright over the world.

But day and night
The man who is awake
Shines in the radiance of the spirit.

Meditate.
Live purely.
Be quiet.
Do your work, with mastery.

Like the moon,
Come out from behind the clouds!
Shine.
